Battle of Byron Chili Fest 2011
Chili Cookoff Rules & Regulations
1. Traditional Chili is defined by the Battle of Byron Executive Committee as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various spices and other ingredients such as beans or pasta.
2. There is a $50 registration fee to be a contestant in the Battle of Byron Chili Cookoff. A business may pay $75 & have their business card advertised on our website. If you wish to have more than 1 entry, there’s a $35 fee for each additional entry. If you are paying your registration by check, please submit your payment by Oct. 11, 2011. A $35 fee will be added to any returned checks. We will accept cash payments for your registration on the evening of Oct. 14, 2011 at the Byron Train Depot.
3. Contestants are competing for the People’s Choice Award (best taste) & Overall Presentation (themed decorated site). All contestants will receive 1 FREE commemorative Battle of Byron 2011 event t-shirt for participating in this years’ event. Anyone who pays $5 may become a “judge” for this event. Each judge will receive 2 different color tickets. One ticket is for their favorite chili entered and the second is for overall presentation. Tickets will be placed at judges’ discretion.
People’s Choice Award winners receive the following:
1st Place - $400 Cash Prize plus Blue Ribbon
2nd Place - $150 Cash Prize plus Red Ribbon
3rd Place - $75 Cash Prize plus White Ribbon
Overall Presentation winners receive the following:
1st Place – Certificate
2nd Place – Certificate
3rd Place – Certificate
4. No ingredient may be pre-cooked in any way prior to the event. The only exceptions are canned or bottled tomatoes, tomato sauce, peppers, pepper sauce, beverages, broth and grinding and/ or mixing of spices. Meats may be treated, pre-cut or ground. MEAT MAY NOT BE PRE-COOKED in any manner prior to the event.
5. The cooking period will be a minimum of 4 hours and a maximum of 6 hours. Cooking during entire cooking period is at the sole discretion of the contestant. The start time will be 9:00am. Judging of chili will begin at 3:00 and ends at 4:00pm. Each contestant must cook a minimum of fifteen (15) quarts of competition chili.
6. Contestants are responsible for supplying their own cooking utensils. No electricity or cooking water will be provided. Propane turkey fryers or camping stoves work well for cooking chili. No generators will be allowed. The Battle of Byron Committee will provide a 10 x 10 area to set up in. Each contestant will be allowed a maximum of 3 cooks. Contestants are responsible for policing and cleaning up the area at the end of the day. Each contestant must provide a trash can with liners for judges to discard sample cups and spoons in after one tastes chili.
7. Each contestant will be given a supply of sample cups and spoons to be used by the judges. Each contestant will receive a cauldron pot with his or hers contestant number displayed on the outside to be placed in a prominent spot of cooking area (near the chili to be judged). Judges are to drop their ticket in cauldron pots when they choose their favorite (taste) chili and or overall presentation. Tickets will be tallied at 4:00pm and the contestant with the most tickets in each category will be declared the winner. 2nd and 3rd place finishers will be decided the same way. Winners will be announced approximately at 4:30pm.
8. At the end of the contest, each contestant with remaining chili may sell it for $3 a bowl. The received funds will go toward the Battle of Byron Chili Fest.
9. Contestants are NOT allowed to breakdown sites until completion of Karaoke Contest, approximately 7:00pm.
